USTA Tennis Play Day Pics

Last Friday we had a wonderful event - our 3rd USTA FREE Tennis Play Day IN Celebration of Nickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play.

Please check out more pics from this event. You'll see 23 children participating in carnival type games. Other more advanced players are playing matches on the 3 courts out of sight in the pics. These events are designed to give the kids an opportunity to stay in the game. It's tough competing with all the other sports - tennis is a bit "out of season" in the fall, so we were proud to draw this crowd. But even more exciting were the volunteers who helped make this 2 hr. event a huge success. Let me tell you about them.

First, the one that I was most proud of - Carolyn Heiss, one of our adult league players. She volunteered figuring that "when she gets together with her grandchildren, she'll have gained some fun ideas for helping them learn the game"; BUT, look at the pics and you'll see that she gained a whole lot more,  a whole new set of "grandkids." They loved her attention. This is what it's all about. It's not just tennis; it's connecting with these kids through tennis, what a great day!

Carolyn was joined by John Perry, Lee HS Boy's Tennis Coach; Norma Comalli, Lee HS Girl's Asst. Tennis Coach; Cathy DeVarennes & Glenn Kaiderling, both are parents of players & Lee CTA Board Members; Ed Lahey, always my #1 Assistant; and Zack Miller & Austin Herzig , CIP students, who are volunteering with their excellent tennis skills.

You'll see in the pics a mom with 2 babies; she brought her 3 older children, 7,5,& 3, to participate. What fun they all had!

We had lots of prizes and awards, as well as Pizza for all donated by the Locker Room, and yogurt parfaits donate by McDonalds.

You may notice in the pics that there are no interior lines on the couts and also some other strange lines; that's because the court resurfacing project was only half completed due to the 2 weeks of rain. The weird lines are part of the crack repair. We were lucky enough to have the ONE SUNNY DAY during that time period and the kids got to play within limitless bounaries - is that an oxymoron?
